Noise is a useful diagnostic because different faults sound different. A pump straining, a grinder on metal and a scaled boiler are three separate sounds with three separate answers.
A loud, straining pump that used to hum quietly is usually starved of water: a partly closed isolation valve, a kinked inlet hose or a blocked filter. Pumps are noisy when they cavitate, and running one dry will kill it, so check supply before you keep brewing.
Metal on metal screeching from a grinder means the burrs are touching, either because the grind has been taken too fine past the zero point or because a burr has come loose. Stop immediately, back the adjustment off and inspect the burrs, because a few seconds of contact wrecks a set.
Knocking, kettling or crackling from the boiler area is scale on the heating element causing localised boiling. It is a maintenance signal, not a mechanical fault, and it is your prompt to descale and to check the water filter is not long past its litre rating.
Most often the pump is fighting for water. Check the isolation valve is fully open, the hose is not kinked and the filter is not exhausted, in that order.
To the grinder, yes. That noise is burrs in contact, and a few seconds of it can flatten a burr set that costs far more than the callout. Stop and back off the adjustment.
Scale on the heating element causing water to boil against it unevenly. Descale and review your filter change interval.
Only if you have identified the noise as harmless, such as a loose panel. Pump, grinder or boiler noises should be resolved before the next service.
The underlying faults do. A starved pump gives inconsistent pressure, worn burrs give inconsistent grind and a scaled boiler gives unstable temperature.
